Just replace it already!
Sleeveface
This may have been my first contact with the replacement idea. The beauty of this, was that it could be done by any regular joe with access to vinyl record, who then, just had to head on to his site to share their experiments. The whole thing has grown incredibly popular and not only do they have their site, they also have a flickr pool.
Jens Windolf
This German photographer created a series called Behind The Scenes. For this project, Windolf collaged two disparate movie stills together while striving to maintain perspectival and contextual coherence. His idea was that “the two ‘destroyed’ images come together in a new way that plays with our imaginative capacity to project and create identities within what we see.”
Transfigurations
Over a period of two years from 2000 to 2002, street photographer Richard Bram and German painter Silvia Willkens, collaborated on a Renaissance-inspired series of portraits that play with the history of portraiture and the interaction of painting and photography.
Etro magazine
A fashion editorial dating all the way to 1999 by photographer Michael Wooley.
Could this have been the beginning of it all?
Souvenirs
Brit Michael Hughes took this idea to the streets and on holidays all over the world, replacing well known monuments by postcards, coffee cups and whatever else that’s handy!
Sony adds
And of course the advertising world had to get their hands on the action!
